Setpoint Has Encountered a Problem and Cannot Continue Windows 10

Hi Josephus. I'm Greg, an installation specialist, 10 year Windows MVP, and Volunteer Moderator here to help you.

1) You should not be running both Bitdefender and Defender as these will conflict. I would use built-in Defender which gives adequate protection, best Windows performance, least issues, and is from Microsoft who knows how to protect their OS best.

If you want the best on-demand scanner install and run Malwarebytes free scanner. https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/. You can turn off the free trial in Account Settings to keep it only as a free scanner.

2) Logitech Setpoint is a driver updater that can also cause issues. I do not recommend it has no software that enables better performance of Logitech products than what Windows will install or Windows Update will update if needed.

3) If you still want to install it then try in Safe Mode with Networking (so you have internet), or Safe Mode, accessed by one of these methods: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

4) If you need a better mouse the wireless mouse I use and recommend for flawless performance is https://express.google.com/u/0/product/Logitech...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and keep me posted. If you will wait to choose if I solved your problem, I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thank you, Greg -- much appreciated!

To clarify:

1. I'm not using both programs... Windows Defender isn't fully working, only doing things in the background, mostly stuff you cannot fully disable. Bitdefender has been my main defender, without interference with computer functions for many years.

I'm also using Malwarebytes as a secondary programn -- not live!

2. Agree. I wanted to install Setpoint only to see whether it would improve mouse operation...  As it happens, with reinstall (Upgrade-in-Place) mouse operation has improved already... So, I know I can live without Setpoint.

Still, I wanted to know why I cannot install a program that is common. (And, yes, I read about reports of similar install problems happening about a couple of years ago.

3. Yes, I will try safe-mode, especially if there's a performance deterioration...

4. I find the old Performance MX to be outstanding in comfort and, at least until recently, performance. But I am familiar with the one you pointed me to and it could well become the next mouse.

Thank you again: I really appreciate your taking the time to cover this so thoroughly. And I will try the safe-mode install soon enough, I'm sure.

Hi Greg,

UPDATE: Just to let you know that attempting to install in safe-mode results in the same failure; the installation 'disappears' -- it appears to terminate and provides no error messages.

If you have any suggestions, that would be great.

Thank you,

JF

See other possible troubleshooting for installing Logitech Setpoint:
https://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/6864...
https://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/1027...
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for...

Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files, and also Step 16 to test a new Local Admin account. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

Update all of your drivers and BIOS/UEFI firmware from PC or motherboard maker's Support Downloads web page, using the full model number, Serial Number or Dell Service Tag on sticker. Compare the latest drivers available for download with the ones presently installed in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start Menu. Make sure you have the latest BIOS or UEFI firmware, Chipset, Display (Video), Sound, USB3, Bluetooth, Network and all other drivers, or else download and install the latest now.

Updating drivers from the Device Manager or Windows Update is rarely enough. The most basic thing we need to learn to maintain a PC is keep the latest manufacturer's drivers installed from their Support Downloads web page.

Thank you, Greg!

I've already tried/confirmed the suggestions in the first two links...

Your comprehensive list of Windows repair tasks is very impressive! I am going to keep it for future reference and I'm sure MS and Dell will lead me, and so many others, to these multiple steps in no time.

I did actually cover many of them already. (All the scans I did returned no errors.) And the most involved steps (for example, account replacement) are way-too-much work for a problem that isn't nearly as significant.

At the moment, I have a second-time escalation with Logitech's in-house support. So I'm going to wait and see.

Finally, my suspicion is that I turned off a service that the Logitech Setpoint package is looking for and that it gets lost without it. (I did so when trying to solve a problem with mini-freezes I started experiencing about 6 months ago, after a Windows update. It was solved when I changed Turn off hard disk to Never.) I can experiment with turning some of those back on.

Thank you again,

JF
